Black-Ops First Day Sales Hit a New Record

| by Ashish Koshy |

Activision Blizzard Inc. on Thursday said that they’ve sold 5.6 million copies of Black-Ops, worth about $ 360 million, and in the process setting a new record for the video game industry.

According to the analysts, the trend was expected thanks to the large number of preorders, and this also brought up the shares of Activision in NASDAQ. Black-Ops, which is the latest from the Call of Duty franchisee, has not only received good reviews and was also the most highly anticipated game of the year which released on Tuesday.

"We started to get some pretty positive vibes when the ratings came out Tuesday," said Sterne, Agee & Leach analyst Arvind Bhatia. "I wouldn't say this is complete surprise but it is a reconfirmation of our expectation that this game can at least do the same numbers as last year," he said.

That's pushing MW2 over the edge

The previous game, Modern Warfare 2, which was out last year sold about 4.7 million copies on the first day in UK and the US. The game went on to sell more than 20 million copies worldwide, making it a blockbuster amongst all segments.

Activision CEO Bobby Kotick said in an interview with Reuters on Thursday that it was still too early to revisit that guidance, despite the strong early sales of "Black Ops".

"It's been a staggering first day performance, but 'Modern Warfare 2' was one of the best-selling games of all time. We're off to a great start, I would say that the momentum is definitely in our favor right now," Kotick said.

The company will also release "World of Warcraft: Cataclysm" in December, the latest update to the multiplayer online game that boasts 12 million subscribers.

The Sony Xperia Tablet Z is the only new 10.1-inch Android tablet to launch this year. And with no one to contend against, it is commanding a substantial premium in the market. This is not any run-of-the-mill tablet, though. The care and polish delivered by Sony is simply brilliant as we’ll see in a bit.
