Greenpeace Upholds Nokia, Slams Apple

07 Dec, 2006, 4:13 pm IST | by Priyanka Pradhan |

Environment NGO, Greenpeace International, has released its new ranking of 14 top manufacturers of PCs and mobile phones, in the latest version of 'Guide to Greener Electronics', on the basis of environment consciousness.

An investigation by the NGO revealed that Apple computers currently ranks last in the list, showing that it has the lowest environmental standards among the companies.

While Nokia has maintained the top spot in the ranking, Apple has been marked the company that has made absolutely no improvements in its policies or practices to use more environment friendly material.

Motorola, on the other hand, has been the fastest mover in the ranking. Although the company was ranked second worst in the first version of the guide, it has moved up the ranking to come in at fourth place. Lenovo has also made a jump from the bottom spot up to its current 8th place. Fujitsu-Siemens and Acer made substantial progress and are now ranked 3rd and 7th respectively, moving up from their earlier 10th and 12th positions.

LGE, Samsung and Sony, however, have lost points for failing to act on their commitments to individual producer responsibility.

Iza Kruszewska, Greenpeace International toxics campaigner says Companies seem to respond to competition rather than conscience. Greenpeace International's 'Guide to Greener Electronics' ranking, turns the spotlight to top electronics companies and challenges them to outrank their competition on the basis of environmental policies on chemicals and waste.
