Eric Ruth has dabbled in ‘de-makes’ before. A complete reversal from all the HD remakes we’ve been seeing recently, his de-makes take games all the way back to the 8-bit era. He tried his luck at Left 4 Dead and DJ Hero (which got a cease-and-desist letter) and has now released his own 8-bit version of Halo:Combat Evolved, titled Pixel Force: Halo. Old School Halo! We checked the side-scrolling platform shooter out and our minds were blown. It’s got heavy Contra and Metroid undertones to it, but the levels themselves are well-designed and try to be faithful to the original, with nice touches like the Halo ring in the background. The weapons, enemies and Master Chief himself have sprites that faithfully recreate how they look in the originals. Nostalgia is never bad, we say. If you get teary-eyed thinking about the golden age of gaming and are annoyed by the direction it’s going today, then this is just what you need. You can download it from Piki Geek here and you really don’t have a reason not to – because it’s available for the absolutely incredible price of free! Halo Junkies, do let you know what you think of this one if/when you try it out. In the meantime, check out the gameplay video below. |
