Will Mr. Jobs unveil the new iPhone 4G? What other goodies does Apple have in store? Come to Tech2.com tonight at 10:30 pm (IST) where we will be live updating Mr. Jobs' keynote speech at WWDC. Keep refreshing the page (F5 on your keyboard) after 10:30 pm for new updates. The lights dimmed, "What a Wonderful World" stopped playing (sign, much?) and Steve Jobs walks on stage to (quite deservedly) a standing ovation. He's first speaking about the iPad. One iPad sold every 3 seconds. 8500 native iPhone apps. 35 million iPad apps downloaded. Average of 17 per iPad. iPad will be in 19 countries by the end of July. There goes the iPad video presentation. iBook app being updated today. 5 million books downloaded so far...about 2.5 per iPad. 5 of 6 biggest publishers tell us that share of eBooks is now 22%. Can view PDFs in iBooks. Steve Jobs: " I want to make something really clear. We support two platforms at Apple. The first one is HTML 5. A fully open uncontrolled platform that is forged and defined by widely respected standards bodies. We fully support html 5, a lot of the technology has come from Apple, and Apple's browsers are in the lead when it comes to implementing html 5." Netflix CEO on stage. Netflix app to come out for iPhone this summer. Same as HDTV for laptops. Apple gets about 50,000 apps every week both new and updates. Around 95% are are approved within the first 5 days. Three reasons they 5% get rejected. One, the app doesn't function as advertised. Two the use of private APIs. Three the app crashes. Exclusive Farmville for iPhone presentation. "Millions of our FarmVille players set alarms for 2 in the morning, bring their laptop to bars. Now they won't have to." Karthik Bala from Activision here to talk about Guitar Hero. "Guitar Hero is about being connected. To your rock star persona, to your friends, and of course to the music." Guitar Hero for iPhone available today for $2.99. Steve's back. “Just last week, we crossed five BILLION downloads. This next thing is my favorite thing is my favorite stat of the whole show. As you know, 70% of revenue goes to the developer. How much have we paid you to date? Just a few days ago we crossed a billion dollars.” “There have been a lot of stats floating around — market research, market share studies, some are ok and some are questionable. I’d like to give you two pieces of data to help you make your own judgments.” “The first is a report that just came out from Nielson: what is the marketshare in the US? RIM is #1 with 35%. iPhone is #2 with 28%, WinMo #3 with 19%, Android 9%. Nielson says iPhone is over 3x that of Android.” US mobile browser usage in the US — 58.2% of US mobile browser usage. “That’s almost 2.5x that of #2, Android. This may help you put things in perspective. So, back to iPhone.” “In 2007, iPhone reinvented what we think of as a phone. It’s hard to remember what it was like before iPhone!” Heh. “There were a few apps, but there was no free market for apps, there was no App Store. We started to change all that in 2007. In 2008, we added 3G networking and the App Store.” "We're introducing iPhone 4. Now stop me if you've already seen this." “This is one of the most beautiful designs you’ve ever seen. This is beyond a doubt one of the most precise and beautiful things we’ve ever made. Glass and steel, its closest kin is like an old Leica camera. And it’s really thin.” 9.33mm thick. 24% thinner than iPhone 3GS. Thinnest smart phone on the planet. “It is just 9.3mm thick, that is 24% thinner than the iPhone 3GS. A quarter thinner in something you didn’t think could get any thinner! In fact, it is the thinnest smartphone on the planet.” Front facing camera, microSIM, camera + LED flash, headset, and a second mic for noise cancellation. “Stainless steel for strength. Glass on the front AND back (for optical quality and scratch resistance). Integrated antennas, and extraordinary build quality.” Retina display. Four times the pixels in the same given space. 326 pixels per inch. 300 pixels per inch is human eye's limit. Further, cannot differentiate. The new display is all about PRECISION! 3G display vs 4G display. Once you go retina, you can't go back. Uh oh, network troubles on stage. "Could not activate cellular networks" Steve is PEEVED! Network gets cut just as Steve's trying to show the phone's web capabilities. Looks like the demo is cut short. 3.5 inch display, 960 x 460 pixels, 326 pixels per inch, 800:1 contrast ratio, IPS technology for superb colour and wide viewing angle. Existing apps look better. Uses A4 chip designed by own team. Shows the back of the iPhone. Retina is better than OLED. 40% better battery. 6 hours of 3G browsing, 10 hours of Wi-Fi browsing. 10 hours video. 40 hours of music. 300 hours standby. Still the environmental report card is strong. Arsenic, BFR, mercury, and PVC free. “We’ve tied the gyro, accelerometer, and GPS for 6-axis motion sensing. It’s perfect for gaming — and one of the reasons it’s perfect is because it’s built into every iPhone 4, so you know it’s there.” Whew! Next demo won't need network. There's a Jenga tower on the display showing the gyroscope. Steve is playing Jenga while 5000 people are watching him! The gyro joins the four other sensors. A whole new camera system for iPhone 4. How do we take pictures better? Pixels are cool. Though cameras should focus on capturing photons and capturing low light photography. 5 MP CAMERA! Backside illuminated sensor. 1.75 sized pixels, 5x digital zoom. Tap to focus. LED flash. Camera records HD video! iMovie for iPhone. Edit video on the go! Demo time again. Record HD video, edit, add titles and transitions on that handy device you take to work everyday. He's demonstrating iMovie for the iPhone. THIS IS SO COOL! Can pinch to change size of timeline and select to trim. Can also add photos and apply Ken Burns effect. Theme songs can be imported directly from iTunes. Geolocations are also a feature. He's editing a video he made in San Francisco. Demo over. iMove application can be bought for $4.99. Steve wants the livebloggers to stop blogging so he can pull out the next demo. Moving on. Apple OS 4. It's renamed. iOS4. Multitasking is KEY!. Doing a demo. Multitasking demo involved switching from Pandora to Mail. Network worked for Mail without bloggers having to turn off their devices. He's pausing Pandora while using Mail. On Yosemite Park website while using other applications as well. iOS4: Multitasking, folders, Retina Display integration, Unified inbox and threading in Mail, enhanced camera and photo apps, deeper enterprise support, new features everywhere.” Enterprise integration — customers are thrilled. Better data protection, wireless app distribution, multiple Exchange accounts… another thing we’re adding on the consumer side, today we have Google and Yahoo search.” Adding Bing! as a search option although Google will remain default option. This month, they will hit 100 millionth iOS sale. iBooks is coming for your phone. Wireless to iPhone, iPad and iPod. Purchase and download a book. Download the same book to all your devices for no extra charge. Automatically syncs place, bookmarks and notes. Demo time using Winnie the Pooh and Piglet. "Partly because I just want you to see how beautiful this looks with our retina display." So that's iBooks. It has the iBookstore which connects to the iTunes store and App store. iAdds. To earn the developers money. Trying to combine emotion of video with interactivity of web. iAdds keep you in your app. Built into iOS4. Apple sells and hosts the ads. 60% of revenues go to the developers. Payment via iTunes Connect. Apple hosts and sells the ads, so all you have to do is tell us where you want them and make the money. Some of the brands are: Nissan, Citi, Unilever, AT&T, GE, Target, Best Buy among others. Got special permission to show Nissan's new electric car for the demo. Nissan will be giving away a car through the ad. iAds will be on all iOS devices on July 1st. $60 million has already been committed from advertisers. 48% of the entire US mobile display ad market in second quarter of the year. One more thing. Please turn your WiFi off. COME ON STEVE!! Video calling. He's calling Jony Ive. This never freezes, unless you guys still have your WiFi on! He wasn't using cellular network to make that call. Hence the requests to turn Wifi off. Video chat is called "Face Time". Works anywhere there is wifi. Can use front or back camera. Still working on cellular provider. He's now showing a Face Time promo video. iPhone 4 to iPhone 4 only. Going to make this open industry standard. “Price and availability! iPhone 4 comes in two colors, black and white — price is $199 in the US for the 16GB model, and 299 for the 32GB model.” “I’m thrilled to announce AT&T is going to make an incredibly generous upgrade offer. If your contract expires any time in 2010, you are immediately eligible for a new iPhone 4 at the same 199 or 299 prices if you top up your contract 2 years.” “So you can get up to 6 months early eligibility to upgrade. We’re thrilled about that. What’s our lineup look like? Yesterday it was the 3G for 99, and the 3GS for 199.” 3G is finished. 3GS is on sale for $99. On sale June 24th. Pre-order will start in a week from tomorrow. Shipping to the United States, Japan, United Kingdom, France and Germany. 18 more countries in July. The 18 more countries are: Asutralia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland. In August, 24 more countries, in September, 44 more countries. Total: 88 countries. Fastest rollout ever. Accessories! Attempted at a case themselves just like the iPad; call it a bunker. 3G, 3GS upgrade available though not all features will be available. Free on June 21st. Figured out how to get upgrades for iPod Touch users. Video summarizing features of new iPhone. Video shows some of the manufaturing process. Steve's back. "Apple's not just a technology company, it's a marriage of technology and humanity." Thanking the people behind making the iPhone. Mark Papermaster, Jony Ive and design team, A4 team, Scott Forstall and iOS team. It's over. That's the magic!
