Microsoft will crank up the heat today in its effort to combat piracy. It hopes to do this by enhancing its Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) test tool to detect PCs that are not licensed properly. It will do so via an update patch. The Alerts, called the “nagulator” by bemused analysts, will be sent directly to users of pirate software in the United States, United Kingdom, Malaysia, Australia and New Zealand when they download Windows updates. The alerts read: 'This copy of Windows is not genuine; you may be a victim of software counterfeiting' and include a link to a web site explaining what people with pirated versions of Windows need to do. The only way to stop the alerts from regularly appearing on the screen is to replace the pirated version with a genuine copy of Windows. Apart from this new anti piracy move, a pilot of "Office Genuine Advantage," (OGA), a program that will operate almost identically to WGA, has been launched. Microsoft is initially planning to introduce OGA in seven languages, initially Brazilian Portuguese, Czech, Greek, Korean, Simplified Chinese, Russian and Spanish. A while back, the company introduced an Office authentication mechanism, known as the Office Validation Assistant, or OVA that uses an ActiveX control to scan users' systems to check validity of the office software. OGA is slated to replace OVA as the office anti piracy measure.
