Microsoft Sued Over Vista Ready Label

06 Apr, 2007, 12:00 pm IST | by Priyanka Pradhan |

Microsoft's been slapped with a lawsuit, for allegedly misleading customers by applying the 'Vista Capable' label on PCs that can't run features such as the space age Aero interface, Flip 3D navigation tools and Media PC capabilities.

The suit is filed by a consumer who accuses Microsoft of 'bait and switch' sales tactics, alleging that it used deceptive marketing tactics to promote its new Windows Vista operating system. In the suit, Dianne Kelley, of Camano Island, WA, USA, claims many personal computers labeled as 'Windows Vista ready' before the OS hit stores in January were not Vista capable. According to the complaint, filed last week, Microsoft had assured consumers that they were purchasing Vista capable machines when, in fact, they could obtain only a stripped down operating system.

Microsoft has stated, on its website, that the Home Basic edition of Windows Vista must run on a PC that has at least an 800 MHz processor, 512 MB of system memory, and a graphics processor that is Direct X 9 compatible. In contrast, premium editions of the OS require at least a 1 GHz processor, 1 GB of system memory and a 40GB hard drive with 15GB of free space to run properly.

Microsoft responded by stating that the Vista ready campaign includes a Vista Premium Ready marketing effort that clearly stated the differences between the various versions of the operating system, and the hardware needed to run them.
