Microsoft Tightens Vista Licensing Rights

In a move that is eerily reminiscent of their "rent a software" plan—that had been conceived and scrapped a few years ago—Pcworld has reported that Microsoft has gone on record to say that it will limit the number of machines to which user’s will be able to transfer their Windows Vista licenses. Microsoft will permit only one transfer from beyond the original PC. Not only that, it has restricted the use of its OS’s in virtualized conditions. Only Windows Ultimate and Windows Business will be useable under Virtualization products. While most people will not be affected by this move, Microsoft has just shut out enthusiasts like me. I upgrade my PC several times a year swapping new components in and out. Under the new licensing scheme, any change in hardware will result in Vista recognizing it as a new machine and beyond one change, my legal copy of Vista will be invalid and I will have to either purchase it again or waste countless hours on a helpdesk asking for a re-activation code. I guess I will be sticking to Windows XP for sometime more. |
