On its PDC 2008 Blog, Microsoft has announced that it will give attendees of the event a pre-beta version of Windows 7, the successor to Windows Vista that will be released late next year. The company plans to let developers see advances across the full range of Windows - including the kernel, networking, hardware and devices, and user-interface. The event will include keynotes by Steven Sinofsky, senior vice president of the Windows and Windows Live Engineering Group, and David Treadwell, corporate vice president of Live Platform Services. While this news may come as a surprise to many, given that Vista is still a fairly new OS, the fact remains that Vista has often been viewed as a sluggish heavy OS and a bad replacement for Windows XP. This can be attributed to the period of development and changes that it had to undergo in its 7 year developmental cycle. Windows 7 which is built on Vista, can be expected to be leaner and perhaps improve on the short-comings of Vista. |
