Since its conception the new Wi-Fi standard 802.11n has been under a cloud. Now in the latest move the Wi-Fi alliance has announced plans to begin certifying next-generation Wi-Fi products based on the new 802.11n standard. This comes way before the 802.11n standard is even ratified as being fully complete. The process of ratification will be complete only in 2008. 802.11n is considered as an evolutionary upgrade as it promises WLAN speeds in excess of 300Mbps. The draft standard was first released in January 2006. Since then several major networking manufacturers including Linksys, D-Link and NetGear have introduced products conforming to the draft. However these products have come under fire as there have been concerns about their interference with current 802.11g products and upgradability of the current line to the new standard once its been ratified. |
