The popularity of Google’s operating system is increasing by the day, but while it continues its upward climb, reportedly its susceptibility to malware has been increasing, just as steadily. A new study by Fortinet has analyzed the malware content for this year and the company has observed a whopping 90 percent jump in malware content in 2011, as compared to 2010. This doesn’t indicate the number of devices that have been infected, but is simply a statistic indicating that there is malware out there on the Android Marketplace, waiting to infect Android smartphones and tablets alike. Android more exposed to malware than Apple devices
Incidentally, malware in the Apple world has increased by a mere 25 percent this year, as compared to the last. As reported by CNET, security analysts FortiGuard Labs have charted out two main reasons behind the over exposure to malware. The first is the screening process difference between Android and iOS developers. Apple has kept a far stricter guideline in the way apps are handled and distributed. The second reason is simply that Android has become increasingly popular for users wanting to buy a smartphone, which has spread out to become a target for cybercriminals as well.
This is definitely not something Google will be proud about and here’s hoping that 2012 will be a better year for them in terms of mobile security. |
