BBC Announces News App For Android

iPhone users are already getting their share of news via the BBC app, which was released back in July of 2010. Android users were left twiddling their thumbs for an Android version for quite some time now.

But not anymore, BBC today announced that they have launched the BBC news app for the Android Market. The news app will be available on all devices running Android 1.6 and above. They have also mentioned that the app’s video experience will be accessible to both flash and non-flash enabled devices. Devices which run Android 1.6 and above will support the app’s in-story videos, with live streaming of the BBC news channel available to devices which have Android 2.2 and above.

According to a post on the BBC blog, “As the range of devices in the market widens, we plan to offer an optimized BBC News experience to the widest mobile audience possible. With this in mind, we'll be working with manufacturers to look at ways of re-versioning the service in the most efficient way. We'll also be working hard on improving the experience across our mobile services”.

The BBC app is currently restricted to the UK region only, but BBC has said that an international version will be released shortly.
