Yahoo! launches Android app with Summly integration
Yahoo is putting its purchase of News summarising app Summly to good use and really quickly at that. The latest release by the company is an Android app called "Yahoo!". The app is supposed to be similar to the one updated for iOS and released late last month.
The app promises to bring “you the best of the web in a virtually endless stream of personalized stories.” Yahoo claims that the app will learn your usage pattern and will start showing you stories that its algorithms think are relevant to you.
The new Yahoo app is now available on Android
Yahoo! for Android lists stories in a never ending stream and also summarises the stories. This is where the Summly integration comes into play. Summly uses intelligent algorithms to parse a story into summaries that are not more than 400 characters long allowing users to skim through a story rather than just read the headline. The latest update to the Yahoo app has also added Facebook and Twitter share for stories, the ability to select topics and a revamped web search that can search images and videos as well.
This is the third mobile app that Yahoo has rolled out this year. The Yahoo Weather app and Mail app were released in April and both have received rave reviews from critics and users. The new Yahoo! app also enjoys a 4.2 star rating in the Google Play Store.
Currently the app is available only for US users of Android and if you are an Android user who wants to see how Summly works then you will have to wait for a little longer.
Summly was hailed by many as a breakthrough for the accurate summaries it provided but never made it to the Android platform. The iOS-only app was bought by Yahoo in March this year for $30 million dollars making its 17-year old founder, Nick D'Aloisio, a millionaire.
