Opera's Released an App Store That Works on Most Platforms

08 Mar, 2011, 10:24 am IST | by Padmini Harchandrai | Apps

Opera launched an App Store yesterday which works on pretty much all mobile devices and browsers. The Opera Mobile Store's collection of applications contains software for most of the major mobile operating systems like Android and Blackberry, as well as systems with Symbian, Palm and Java OSes. Two notable systems it doesn't work on are iOS (of course) and Linux based mobile systems.

Opera's Mobile Store has a pretty standard set up. Apps are divided by category and you can see  also them by 'featured apps' and 'top apps'. The company's aim with the Opera Mobile Store is to go beyond the browser and venture into mobile services. It's also launched a developer portal for mobile developers who want to publish their apps for multiple platforms at once. What will be interesting is the availability of cross platform apps that may or may not be in app store's native to the device's OS. This will give users an incentive to switch over from native app stores to a wider based app store like Opera's Mobile Store.
