Budget 08: CRTs and Plasmas to Get Cheaper?

29 Feb, 2008, 8:00 pm IST | by Abhimanyu Radhakrishnan |

This line from the 2008 Union Budget speech hints at some reduction in prices of locally manufactured tech products:

135. I propose to fully exempt from duty specified parts of set top boxes and specified raw materials for use in the IT/electronic hardware industry.

The latter part of that sentence ie. 'specified raw materials' has been notified here.

There's a lot of tech manufacturing jargon in there but it looks like a lot of raw material for CRTs and Plasma panels seems to have been exempted entirely. Considering that most of the global majors such as LG and Samsung make CRTs in India not to mention Indian MNCs like Videocon, we think that some of this may pass on to consumers.

We're awaiting comment from all the players and of course the The Consumer Electronics and TV Manufacturers Association (CETMA). Watch this space!
