After sex games, Jedi powers and Star Wars-style video chat comes another hack for Kinect – one that allows you to control a humanoid robot. Gundam fans, put your tissues away because this is still in its infancy stage. Ninja Robot, Ninja Robot... Here’s the story. Fast Company reports that Taylor Veltrop, a software engineer and robotics enthusiast has created a software that links his Kinect peripheral to his robot, named Veltrobot, via wireless. Of course, Veltrobot has a custom software installed in its Operating System that allows it to mirror the movements that the Kinect data feed is sending it. How it works is that Veltrop’s code decodes the motion tracking and body sensing information from the Kinect before sending it to the Veltrobot. The end result - a humanoid robot that mirrors your movements, much like the ones in Neon Genesis Evangelion and Ninja Robots, only smaller. Check out the video below to see it in action and make no mistake about it, this is cool. Veltrop claims to have accomplished this in a mere month and he’s only an enthusiast. If a bunch of professionals got together and worked on something like this, we can’t even imagine the kind of inventions that’d come out. That beer-chucking robot might even be mass produced! |
