AMD Contemplates Liquid Cooling for High-end FX CPUs

13 Aug, 2011, 2:33 pm IST | by Roydon Cerejo | CPU Coolers

AMD’s eight-legged processors are on the horizon and word has it that the Sunnyvale-based company is giving serious thought about bundling liquid coolers with their high end CPUs. It’s still not clear whether this only applies to their flagship processor or to all the eight core models. This actually makes a lot of sense, given the fact that these flagship chips will be bought mainly by enthusiasts who’ll want to upgrade the cooling. Instead of a large and bulky cooler, a liquid cooler is just as effective and doesn’t require too much space. Self-contained coolers come pre-assembled, so all you have to do is mount it on the CPU and you’re good to go. Also, most big companies like Corsair, Antec, CoolerMaster, etc. have many inexpensive solutions, so even if AMD does decide to go ahead with the plan, the overall cost of the processor should not increase by much and if you’re going to spend 15K (or more) on a high end CPU anyways, I’m sure you won’t mind spending a bit more for a better cooler that’s ready to use out of the box.

AMD is currently looking at Antec for this solution, to be precise, their Kühler H2O 620 liquid cooling system. The cooler consists of a water block with a copper base and a 120mm cooling fan with speeds up to 2000rpm. This cooler was co-developed with  liquid cooling specialist, Asetek. Rumor has it that Intel is also thinking along the same lines as AMD for their upcoming Sandy Bridge E CPUs.
