AMD Inches Ahead with Improving Fusion Sales

05 Aug, 2011, 10:39 am IST | by Rossi Fernandes | CPUs

The PC market in general may not be witnessing the same growth, it has been in the past few years, but things are beginning to look slightly better for AMD. A report by IDC shows that AMD is picking up pace. The report says that both Intel and AMD have been aggressive by launching new products over the last few months. IDC noticed a growth of some 60 percent for processors with integrated graphics solutions. This includes AMD’s Fusion line of APUs, which combine both GPU and CPU into a single unit. Intel is way ahead of AMD, in terms of market share. Intel had a market share of some 79.3 percent, at the end of this quarter. AMD earned 20.4 percent in the quarter. In comparison to the previous quarter, Intel lost 1.5 percent and AMD gained the same amount.

VIA, a CPU and chipset manufacturing company that has been out of the picture in the mainstream PC component market earned a share of 0.3 percent. The PC market isn’t crashing but it isn’t growing either, at the pace seen in the previous years. This, according to IDC is a result of economic struggles across some countries. The prediction for the year-on-year growth rate for the PC market has reduced to 9.3 percent from 10.3 percent.
