CES 2011: Intel's Ivy Bridge to Make the Jump to DirectX 11

| by Sriram Gurunathan | CPUs

While the launch of Intel’s second generation Core processors, codenamed Sandy Bridge, has been the talk of the town at CES, Intel has been quietly laying the groundwork for the next generation’s hype machine. In an interview with the IDG News Service at CES, Mooly Eden, vice president and general manager of the PC Client Group at Intel said the company will integrate DirectX 11-capable GPUs into their next generation of Core processors, codenamed Ivy Bridge. This gives AMD the upper hand in this minor battle because their AMD Fusion APUs already support DirectX 11.

Intel's one step behind this time.

The Sandy Bridge processors were the first from Intel’s stable to integrate both the CPU and the Graphics Processor on one chip.  However, these didn’t come with DX11 support like they were expected to, instead only supporting DX10.1. Intel had a reason behind that though, according to Eden. "When we look at the schedule, we didn't think it was... the right time. There's not much usage,” he said, most likely referring to the relatively few programs and games that have been released with DirectX 11 support.

Ivy Bridge will be developed using a 22nm manufacture process and will succeed the 32nm Core i3, i5 and i7 Sandy Bridges. With Intel’s record of releasing a new generation of processors every year, you can expect the Ivy Bridges to come out next year. Does that mean Intel will take over CES 2012 too?
