Computex 2011: AMD Launches 9-Series Chipset

While board images based on AMD’s next generation chipset have been floating around the web for the last couple of weeks, AMD finally, officially announced the new AMD 9-series chipset. The new chipset is part of the Scorpius platform. The board has support for AMD’s upcoming 8-core Zambezi processors. The new chipset supports the AM3+ socket designed specifically for the processor, but is also backward compliant. The chipset supports up to 6 SATA 3 supports along with the standard set of features found on modern boards such as Gigabit Ethernet and PCIe 2.0 High expectations from the upcoming processor
The new line of chipsets will arrive on boards from AMD’s partner vendors such as ASRock, ASUS, Biostar, ECS, Foxconn, Gigabyte, Jetway and MSI. There has been a lot of news surrounding upcoming Zambezi processors for desktops. There is still no official launch date announced by AMD. There are also rumours that the new processors have some performance issues and the launch might be delayed to as late as September. On the contrary, the official launch of the chipset could also indicate that the launch of the new processors isn’t too far away. |
