Intel was in the news recently for their 3D-transistor announcement. The new technology should allow future processors to be more power efficient and faster than its predecessors. Intel is apparently working on its future Atom processors called Silvermont. Efforts to get Atom to work on tablets
Sources claim that the new processors are scheduled to be launched sometime in 2013. The Silvermont like most of the other Atom processors will be a SoC (system-on-a-chip). Current Atom processors from Intel are based on the 45nm fabrication process. These are to be upgraded to the 32nm process like the current mainstream Sandy Bridge line of processors. The 32nm Cedarview chips are expected in the latter half of this year. Eventually, when the Silvermont processors are manufactured, they would be based on the 22nm process. The new Atom processors should be even better suited to low power devices such as tablets. Intel is currently facing fierce competition from processors based on ARM’s architecture. |
