Just when things were looking much better with dual core processors being launched for smart phones and tablets, Qualcomm decided to do one better and announce a quad core processor at MWC 2011. The Snapdragon APQ8064 processor would be modeled on the 28nm Krait microarchitecture and would be able to reach speeds as high as 2.5 GHz. Since the cores will be low-power cores, power consumption will be reduced to 25 per cent of the power requirements of the first Snapdragon processors. The new processor will be designed for future generation tablets and computing devices. The additional cores and high core speed would be ideal for multithreaded and multicore applications and also for graphics intensive applications. The Krait chipset would include an Adreno A320 graphics processor. The Krait will support NFC (Near field communication) along with the usual WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, FM and also support for a 20 MP camera. The quad core APQ8064 will be ready sometime around early 2012. A similar dual core processor MSM8960 that will include a LTE modem, which will be based on the same architecture, will be ready in the second quarter of this year. A single core version of the processor called the MSM8930 will also made, but no sampling dates have been announced for it. |
