Qualcomm, like some of the other mobile processor manufacturers has been hard at work trying to build faster and more sophisticated processors. At an event in Istanbul, Qualcomm outlined some of these efforts on the Snapdragon platform that is currently being used in phones. The interesting bits of this event were news on processors for next generation devices. Qualcomm plans to bring out a 2.5 GHz quad-core processor based on the 28nm fabrication process. These S4 class of platforms will have Adreno graphics processors built into them. Pocket-lint has an image of Qualcomm’s roadmap for the upcoming year. Quad-core firepower to be unleashed next year
Qualcomm’s CEO, Paul Jacobs also said that the processor race wasn’t all about speed, but also about how much the platform can be optimized. The next big thing to hit markets are the 1.5 GHz dual-core Snapdragon processors with the Adreno 220 GPU. This platform will support 1440 x 900 displays, as well as stereoscopic 3D. The HTC Sensation XE will run on this kind of hardware and is expected to reach markets soon. The first look at the upcoming 2.5 GHz quad-core processors is most likely going to be at the Mobile World Congress in February next year. Phones with this hardware are likely to come later next year. |
