It may seem as if tablets are in fact taking a toll on the PC market share. Gartner and IDC are reporting a drop in PC shipments in the last quarter. Not everyone lost out – Lenovo, Apple and Toshiba were some of the biggest winners. The reports were based on shipments of PCs, notebooks, netbooks and tablets (or, the lack of it).
Mainstream PC manufacturers are the ones to be hit the hardest
The biggest companies to be hit were Acer and ASUS. The increased popularity of tablets has seen the netbook market being affected. Acer is still lagging behind the other companies, as far as tablets are concerned. Apple’s gain comes from the recent update to their MacBook Pro notebooks. PC shipments also saw a big drop in Japan as a result of the earthquake. Gartner reported a 13.1 per cent drop in PC shipments in the country. They also reported that Indian consumers didn’t purchase PCs or notebooks, instead they were more inclined towards consumer electronics such as televisions during the Cricket World Cup, last month. |
