Women online gamers in the US outnumber men, according to Active Gamer Benchmark Study, indicating that online gaming is increasingly becoming a social activity for people. The research found that among the roughly 117 million Gamers in the U.S. in 2006, more than half (56%) play games online, and that 64% of all online gamers are women. The research also revealed that although teenagers continue to be majority of gamers, women are fast gaining ground and now make up nearly two- thirds of all online gamers. However, men outnumber women in the overall video gaming territory by more than two-to-one. Moreover, the study showed that since online games offer simple and engaging encounters, they have been attracting both existing and new gamer audiences, especially older women. It also said that the growth in broadband access has helped redefine Massively Multiplayer Online Games (MMOG). Given the penetration of personal computers in the US households, PCs have become the platform of choice for players of casual games, especially among women.
