Counter-Strike: Global Offensive Announced

13 Aug, 2011, 12:39 am IST | by Avinash Bali | Gaming

Earlier on in the day we spoke of rumors regarding a sequel to Counter-Strike and now Valve has come clean with an official announcement. Counter-Strike Global Offensive (CS: GO) will release for the PlayStation 3 (via PSN), Xbox360 (Xbox Live) and PC (through Steam) sometime in early 2012. The game will feature new weapons, maps, gameplay modes, a new matchmaking system as well as updated remakes of certain popular maps like De_Dust etc.

But unlike a full-fledged sequel, CS: GO looks more like an HD remake of sorts with a bunch of new gameplay mechanics thrown into the mix. Professional CS players the world over were invited to Valve’s studio to check this game out and according to them, the game while obviously looking better, plays a lot like its older brother.

Even the official press release reiterates that fact with this line, “CS: GO promises to expand on CS' award-winning gameplay and deliver it to gamers on the PC as well as the next gen consoles and the Mac” which obviously means this isn’t Counter-Strike 2.  Valve haven’t released any media for the game, be it gameplay footage or pictures but we’re guessing we’ll get to see some at Gamescom 2011.
