Hideo Kojima doesn't want to be known as 'the Metal Gear guy'

| by Shunal Doke | Gaming

Hideo Kojima is one of the most well-known developers when it comes to games. This is primarily because of his work on the Metal Gear series. According to an interview with EGM, Kojima doesn't always want to be known as the 'Metal Gear guy'. Kojima also talks about using concepts from the next Metal Gear game for new IP.

“I’m often misinterpreted,” Kojima said. “I’ve always said that I want to work on original properties, but Metal Gear offers plenty of benefits. The Fox Engine, for example, took a lot of time and money [to create]; we were only able to develop it because it was intended for the next Metal Gear. In the next game, I’m introducing concepts intended for entirely new intellectual properties using the Metal Gear brand."

“I’ll admit that I hope my future endeavours are thought of as ‘works by Hideo Kojima’ rather than ‘from the creator of Metal Gear. I haven’t really shown the world what else I might be capable of yet. This may sound pretentious, but I don’t like being thought of as ‘the Metal Gear guy.’ There’s a lot more I can do.”

Back in September, Konami had released a video that shows off the Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes game engine, titled the FOX Engine, along with a short glimpse of the gameplay.

When information about the game originally surfaced, not much was known about the game, including who the protagonist will be. Now, thanks to the video, we can rest assured that the protagonist is Big Boss (a.k.a. Naked Snake), who was the protagonist of the PlayStation 2 game, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater and the PlayStation Portable game, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. While the character isn’t mentioned by name, the major confirmation for who the character is comes from the eyepatch he wares on his right eye, which he lost during the events of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater.

Though there isn’t any information about the new Metal Gear Solid game other than this, we’re headed closer towards the release of the spin-off title, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. Where Metal Gear Solid is the story of Solid Snake (and in some cases, his “father” Naked Snake), Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance will be the story of Raiden, the child soldier turned cyborg ninja.

The title brings two of the world’s most respected teams together with a common goal of providing players with a fresh synergetic experience that combines the best elements of pure action and epic storytelling, all within the expansive Metal Gear universe. Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance introduces Raiden as the central character; a child soldier transformed into a cyborg ninja, equipped with a high-frequency katana blade and a soul fuelled by revenge.
