We’ve kept you up to date on Sony going after the entire PS3 hacking community, like Geohot and fail0verflow and the other prominent ones, with quite some viciousness. Former iPhone hacker George Hotz, aka Geohot, was sued for releasing the PS3 root key, which broke wide open the console’s security system and left it prone to jailbreaking. Run, PR guy! If they’re going after anyone who does the same, Sony might as well sue one of their own now. Here’s the backstory – if you’ve seen any of the Sony America ads, you’ll no doubt be familiar with Kevin Butler, a fictional character who kinda became so popular that he was made the spokesperson for Playstation games. They decided to give this character a Twitter account and obviously laid off the workload to a PR agency, which in this case was Deutsche. Flash forward to a couple of days ago and @exiva tweeted the very same root key that Geohot released to the Kevin Butler account along with a message saying “Come at me”. Shockingly, the Kevin Butler twitter account replied to the tweet saying "Lemme guess...you sank my Battleship?", with the root key included! The tweet has since been deleted, but exiva, real name Travis La Marr, took a screenshot that's still around for all to see. This news made it all the way to the ears of Major Nelson, who holds a similar post to Butler except… you know, he’s real. He jokingly tweeted "Anyone up for a game of battleship ? ;)" Well played, Nelson. Well played. Heh Anyway, everyone involved better hire a pretty good lawyer. |
