A new sequel to the Metal Gear Solid franchise has been announced by Hideo Kojima in a closed event in Tokyo, according to Gaming Bolt. The event was under a press embargo, meaning people weren’t allowed to leak information of the event. Despite the embargo, many people started tweeting about the new game, titled Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes.
Another thing that leaked out along with the tweets was a screenshot of the game with the protagonist, presumably Big Boss (a.k.a. Naked Snake), standing in the rain, courtesy of Famitsu. According to the tweets, the game will be set in an open world; it will have real time cutscenes and a character named Snake will be returning – though it is unknown which Snake exactly: Solid, Liquid, Solidus or Naked Snake. Judging by the screenshot, it looks like the current generation of consoles will have a hard time running the game, so it could be slated for a release on the next-gen consoles.
Looks like Naked Snake might be making a comeback
The last time Naked Snake was playable in a Metal Gear Solid game was Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker – originally released for the PlayStation Portable, but later released for the PlayStation 3 as part of the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection.
We had recently reported on news about a movie based on the Metal Gear Solid franchise. Rumours of the movie originally started due to a picture which showed the logos of Columbia and the developers of Metal Gear Solid games – Kojima Productions shortly before the Metal Gear Solid 25th Anniversary event. Some argue that the Metal Gear Solid games would be perfect as movies as the games are known to boast cutscenes that last upwards of one hour.
Though there isn’t any information about the new Metal Gear Solid game other than this, we’re headed closer towards the release of the spin-off title, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. Where Metal Gear Solid is the story of Solid Snake (and in some cases, his “father” Naked Snake), Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance will be the story of Raiden, the child soldier turned cyborg ninja.
The title brings two of the world’s most respected teams together with a common goal of providing players with a fresh synergetic experience that combines the best elements of pure action and epic storytelling, all within the expansive Metal Gear universe. Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance introduces Raiden as the central character; a child soldier transformed into a cyborg ninja, equipped with a high-frequency katana blade and a soul fuelled by revenge.
Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is set in the near future where cyborg technology has become commonplace throughout society. Three years have passed since the collapse of the Patriots system that had been secretly controlling the global power balance from the shadows. However, peace remains elusive. The dissemination of cybernetic technology has triggered instability and conflict as those who control the trade gain increasing power. Furthermore, large ‘Private Military Companies’, or PMCs, that had been supported and controlled by the Patriots have collapsed, spawning countless rogue entities with origins to larger criminal organisations. These renegade PMCs employing cyborg technology have become increasingly more disruptive shifting policy and power at will. As a member of the peace-keeping PMC ‘Maverick Security’, Raiden lives by the mantra of protecting and saving lives. But as the world plunges further into asymmetric warfare, the only path that leads him forward is rooted in resolving his past and carving through anything that stands in his way.
