Obsidian's next game could be a Kickstarter project

| by Shunal Doke | Gaming

Earlier this week, Obsidian had started teasing us with hints to its upcoming RPG – Project X. The teasing is about to come to an end today, as on going to Obsidian’s website will show you the same old dragon that’s eating itself, along with the number 1 inside.

There is also a new quote on the website: “This world wants to drag us down, it does. It made you a Watcher. No one asks for that. And the weight, that guilt they want to hang around my neck, you don’t have to carry it one more step. You think they won’t let you rest, but it’s not up to them. It never was.” The source code for the page reads: “There is no sleep for the Watcher.”

There can be any amount of speculation as to what exactly Obsidian’s Project X is. It could either be a sequel to Neverwinter Nights 2, a sequel to Knights of the Old Republic 2, or a revival of any of Obsidian’s older games. Obsidian is mostly made up of the developers who worked in Black Isle studios, responsible for games like Baldur’s Gate II and Planescape: Torment.

According to Eurogamer, Obsidian has been registered as a company on Kickstarter for about a month, but hasn’t done anything with the crowd-sourcing website after that. This could hint towards a crowd-funded spiritual sequel of some sorts to classics like Planescape: Torment, Baldur’s Gate II or Icewind Dale. This theory is further helped by Obsidian’s information on Kickstarter: "Prior to Obsidian, each of the owners worked for Black Isle Studios as production, design, management, and programming staff, having worked on the Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, and Planescape: Torment series. We loved working on those games, and feel there's a real nostalgia for them, and we're looking to you for help to bring them back!"

A couple of days ago, the Obsidian website had counted down till 3 with the following quote: “The book unread is unwritten. The reason we don’t explain it is the reason we use it. Its power is in its mystery. That is the Leaden Key, in part, in whole. Is it clear?” and “Digging for truth buries the seeker.” And the source code for the page reads: “Two centuries ago, your divine champion told the people of Dyrwood to grovel at his feet. If you've come on pilgrimage to the blasted crater that was our reply, Godhammer Citadel is *that* way.”

So there goes my wish for a fantasy based Alpha Protocol, but here’s hoping a revival of Planescape: Torment somehow!
