Rovio teases Star Wars-based Angry Birds

| by Aaron Almeida | Gaming

Over the past couple of months, Rovio has released some brilliant games such as Amazing Alex and Bad Piggies. Rovio's Angry Birds franchise raised the bar for handheld games on smartphones. Rovio has now teased a Star Wars-style Angry Birds image in gif format on its official Angry Birds Tumblr page.

The Tumblr page does not give away much; all it shows is the red bird in a Jedi cloak holding a blue lightsaber. This could probably mean that Rovio has something based on Star Wars up its sleeve in its forthcoming adaptation of the popular Angry Birds game.

Is this a sign of things to come?

Late last month, Rovio Entertainment, finally released the latest game in the Angry Birds franchise, Bad Piggies. The game, launched for iOS, Android, Mac, and PC, is a spin-off to the Angry Birds games, and is told from the pigs’ point of view.

“We’ve never done anything like this,” said Petri Järvilehto, EVP of Games. “Where Angry Birds was all about destruction, Bad Piggies is all about the joy of construction. It’s not just about getting three stars -- in this game, failing is almost as much fun as succeeding!”

The game is set on Piggy Island, where the Bad Piggies are after the eggs again. As usual, nothing is going according to the plan. They need help in creating the ultimate flying machine, and steering it safely to their destination.

According to a statement by Rovio, with more than 60 levels, and free updates in the offing, the game takes you through hours pig-crashing, exploding, and flying fun. Fans can unlock an additional 30 levels by getting three stars. Four sandbox levels let them stretch their creativity to the utmost. 33 objects are available to create the ultimate machine, if you can navigate around all the obstacles first.

This is the first time the Bad Piggies are protagonists of a game, but it is just the beginning of a series of Bad Piggies-related games and other entertainment.

"We've had a lot of fun creating a totally new and unique gameplay experience," said Petri Järvilehto during the announcement of the game. "There's so much more to these pigs than what is seen in the Angry Birds games, and Bad Piggies is the first glimpse into what's going on in the imaginative and ingenious minds of the pigs."

The Angry Birds series has been undeniably successful. Starting with its debut on iOS devices and eventual ports into other platforms, the franchise has proved extremely popular. At one point, the Playstation 3 version of Angry Birds even became the best selling game on PSN. The company announced one billion downloads for Angry Birds in May. The download count includes all platforms and all the Angry Birds games that Rovio has made, which are: Angry Birds, Angry Birds Seasons, Angry Birds Rio and Angry Birds Space, as well as the free, lite versions of the games.
