It’s been a topsy-turvy few hours for Sony. The good - they successfully managed to get a temporary restraining order against Geohot but there was some bad news waiting for them later in the day. But first, let’s talk about the lawsuit. We told you a couple of weeks ago that Sony was filing a lawsuit against former iPhone hacker George Hotz (more famously known as Geohot) and hacker group fail0verflow after the security system for their console, the Playstation 3, was completely blown open by them. Now it seems a Judge in San Francisco has ruled in favour of Sony, giving them a temporary restraining order against Hotz, ordering him to immediately remove all references to the root key from his website and to surrender his computer and hard-drives to Sony with 10 days. Arr, arr everywhere It’s an extremely meaningless victory though, because the key has been available for all to see for a few weeks now. Even if they have succeeded in getting it removed from Hotz’s website, it’s still only a Google search away. Regardless, what came later must’ve really shocked Sony. Following the jailbreaking of the Playstation 3 v3.55 firmware, Sony had announced that they’d be releasing a new update to enhance the security on the console. Some enhancement that turned out to be, because the firmware was cracked within hours of release. Prominent Wii hacker KaKaRoToKs posted a message from his Twitter account announcing that he had managed to crack the new firmware. He then went on to publish the signing key for the firmware, meaning other hackers can get to work on creating custom firmware for 3.56. It really does look like the PS3 has been jailbroken for good. Sony have got nothing to be ashamed of though, because their console withstood the attack of hackers for a good three and a half years. And they can take solace in the fact that they managed to stifle Geohot a little bit by taking his precious hardware away from him. |
