Konami has released a new trailer for The Phantom Pain. The trailer shows a protagonist that looks very similar to the Metal Gear games' protagonist—Snake. It also has parts where the character is sneaking around. A strange point is that the character's face is never seen, though, and the game seems to have many trappings of the survival horror genre.
Many consider The Phantom Pain to be the latest game in the Metal Gear Solid series, due to the character's likeness to Snake and the general emphasis on stealth gameplay. The game is being developed by Moby Dick studio, and if it is a Metal Gear game, it could explore an alternate universe where Snake loses his left hand.
Hideo Kojima had unveiled Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes earlier this year during the 25th anniversary event for the game series. When information about the game originally surfaced, not much was known about the game, including who the protagonist will be. Now, thanks to the video, we can rest assured that the protagonist is Big Boss (a.k.a. Naked Snake), who was the protagonist of the PlayStation 2 game, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater and the PlayStation Portable game, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. While the character isn’t mentioned by name, the major confirmation for who the character is comes from the eyepatch he wares on his right eye, which he lost in the events of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater.
Though there isn’t any information about the new Metal Gear Solid game other than this, we’re headed closer towards the release of the spin-off title, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. Where Metal Gear Solid is the story of Solid Snake (and in some cases, his “father” Naked Snake), Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance will be the story of Raiden, the child soldier turned cyborg ninja.
The title brings two of the world’s most respected teams together with a common goal of providing players with a fresh synergetic experience that combines the best elements of pure action and epic storytelling, all within the expansive Metal Gear universe. Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance introduces Raiden as the central character; a child soldier transformed into a cyborg ninja, equipped with a high-frequency katana blade and a soul fuelled by revenge.
Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is set in the near future where cyborg technology has become commonplace throughout society. Three years have passed since the collapse of the Patriots system that had been secretly controlling the global power balance from the shadows. However, peace remains elusive. The dissemination of cybernetic technology has triggered instability and conflict as those who control the trade gain increasing power. Furthermore, large ‘Private Military Companies’, or PMCs, that had been supported and controlled by the Patriots have collapsed, spawning countless rogue entities with origins to larger criminal organisations. These renegade PMCs employing cyborg technology have become increasingly more disruptive shifting policy and power at will. As a member of the peace-keeping PMC ‘Maverick Security’, Raiden lives by the mantra of protecting and saving lives. But as the world plunges further into asymmetric warfare, the only path that leads him forward is rooted in resolving his past and carving through anything that stands in his way.
