Viral ad website for Grand Theft Auto V goes live
| by Shunal Doke |
Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto series is one of the most celebrated game franchises ever. The next game in the franchise, Grand Theft Auto V, is one of the most anticipated games right now. The series is known for its open world and great satire of life in America. One of the things the series has satirized since "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas" has been Scientology with the in-game version being called the Epsilon Project. Recently, a website meant for viral advertising for Grand Theft Auto V has been started.
The site is the official homepage for The Epsilon Project, and also has a twitter account. The Epsilon Project makes some audacious claims such as “The world is 157 years old,” and “We all come from the same tree”.
Grand Theft Auto V viral marketing has gone live
The previous game in the series, Grand Theft Auto IV, starred Nico Bellic, a fresh off the boat immigrant in Liberty City, which was geographically based on New York. The game’s major theme was a satire of the “American Dream”, with Nico Bellic trying to run away from his past.
After GTA IV, Rockstar released two major expansion packs for the games - The Lost and the Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony. The Lost and the Damned stars a new protagonist, Johnny Klebitz, who is a member of Liberty City’s Motorcycle Club The Lost, a club which was featured in missions throughout the course of GTA IV. The Ballad of Gay Tony stars another protagonist, Luis Lopez. The game shows the more “glamourous” side of Liberty City, with its vibrant nightlife. Rockstar later on released both the games in a single standalone box titled Grand Theft Auto: Episodes From Liberty City.
Grand Theft Auto V will see players returning to Los Santos, a fictional recreation of Los Angeles, and its speculated, the rest of San Andreas as well. According to its earlier depiction in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, the fictional state of San Andreas has three cities - Los Santos (based on Los Angeles), San Fierro (based on San Francisco) and Las Venturas (based on Las Vegas). The state also has a large countryside and a large desert.
Rockstar had done a Q&A on its website about GTA V last month. When asked by fans about why Rockstar doesn’t release more news about its upcoming open world game, the company replied, “As we have said before, we have often had long gaps between asset releases on previous games and will continue to do so in the future. We are sorry if you find this frustrating, but please understand, we don’t do this because we ‘don’t care about our fans' 'don’t respect our fans’ 'hate GTA fans etc' – precisely the opposite! We do it because we want to make sure we only release 100% correct information, and because we want to keep plenty back for the actual game release so there are still lots of surprises when you play it. The only things we care about are that you enjoy the experience of actually playing the game and that we release accurate information. We just have not been in a position to show more of the game than the trailer and will not be for a while yet. We did, however, manage to sneak a quick screenshot out for you… it’s not much, but we thought it was pretty fun.”
Rockstar has confirmed that there will be no 'beta' test for the game. “There is absolutely no ‘beta’ test for the game. If you see ads or solicitations to join a beta program, beware as this could be a dodgy online phishing scam. Your best bet is to only trust information as official if you’re seeing it announced here at the Rockstar Newswire,” the company stated.
