This past summer, sources close to the matter stated that Amazon had considered a merger with Research in Motion, hiring an investment bank for the merger. According to Reuters, RIM has turned down all offers for takeovers, from Amazon as well as other buyers, wanting to fix its problems on its own. What is not confirmed is whether RIM and Amazon actually sat down and had a "takeover-talk" or whether there were any other buyers interested at the time. One head of technology investment banking at a Wall Street bank said, "They have had approaches from folks who have wanted to have discussions. The issue is it is hard to find a value that makes sense with a falling knife." Would Amazon RIP RIM?
RIM seems to be focusing on recovery by launching new phones, better use of their messaging service, BBM and general restructuring. Some sources say that Amazon and BlackBerry are still discussing options to work on their commercial relationship. The Internet company launched a service last year, which made their music catalogue available to some BlackBerry users. RIM says that licensing deals are on the cards, but a complete buyout isn't, yet. |
