Anonymous brings down Cert-in.org, site finally back up

| by Karan Shah | General

Anonymous brought down the Government’s Computer Emergency Response Team for a substantial amount of time today, though the site cert.in-org is finally back to normalcy now. Anonymous mentioned on their Twitter account, "We will keep attacking http://cert-in.org.in and http://india.gov.in ! #GOI, ready to face ups and downs?" The website was down close to five hours back, but now seems to be working again. For those not in the know, Cert-in.org is India’s premier agency that deals with cyber security and it is the national nodal agency for responding to computer security incidents as and when they occur. Anonymous used the DDoS attack to completely flood the servers on which the site is located. Along with this, Anonymous UK tweeted, "#TangoDown http://cert-in.org.in #OpIndia want it down all day xD," showing support for the attack that was carried out.

This new form of uprising and revolt has become a hot topic as Wseb censorship has become the major area of debate in recent times. The gravity of the issue came to light only recently when incidents of hacking in retaliation to web censorship became a frequent occurrence. With the government on one side taking an increasingly active stance in tightening the reins on the way we access content on the web, groups like Anonymous are on the other hand citing free speech. OpIndia is against the banning of entire websites, if only a part of the website infringes copyrights.

Recently, Reliance acquired John Doe orders to safeguard copyrights of its films. Then, Chennai-based Copyright Labs also acquired the same for movies like Dhammu and 3. This led to the complete blocking of websites, like The Pirate Bay and Vimeo. All this hasn’t gone well with Anonymous, which stands by online freedom. Hence, Anonymous is carrying out the protest across the country today. The group’s official blog page has the schedule for today, the 9th of June, along with a set of directives, which the group claims are a must and should be adhered to, during the peaceful protest.  A lot of netizens are supporting the cause and have signed up for the protest via social networking sites. If you're unsure as to whether to join the protest or no, here are reasons why you should join Anonymous' protests today.
