Anonymous Issues a PayPal Boycott Message

27 Jul, 2011, 11:06 pm IST | by Karan Shah | General

Anonymous has sent in a strong retaliation message to PayPal for the arrests of around 14 people who were charged with a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack on PayPal’s systems. Anonymous has urged all of its supporters and anyone using PayPal to shut down their accounts and look out for other alternatives. The operation has been nicknamed #OpPayPal and has already been trending on Twitter.

This action from Anonymous seems like a tactical change shifting from illegal DDoS attacks to a plea to anyone and everyone to stop using PayPal. At present, according to Anonymous’ Twitter account, around 450 PayPal accounts have already been deleted with around 9000 accounts predicted to be closed in the next week. What has particularly infuriated Anonymous is the arrest of a girl named Mercedes Renee Haefer by the FBI during the first phase of Anonymous vs. PayPal attacks. Renee pleaded innocence; however, the Government charged her with Conspiracy to Commit Intentional Damage to a Protected Computer and Aiding and Abetting. She is currently facing charges of up to 15 years in prison.

PayPal have refused to comment on this story as of now. Stay tuned to this space for more details.
