CES 2013: Corning to showcase Gorilla Glass 3

| by Shunal Doke | General

Corning has announced its plans for CES next week. The company plans to introduce two new products: Corning Gorilla Glass 3, a new glass composition with durability enhancements, and Optical Cables by Corning, fibre-based, device-to-device connectivity solutions that significantly extend the data transmission range past the limits of copper-based cables.

“This year at CES, Corning will demonstrate its industry leadership in speciality glass and fibre optic technologies with the introduction of two products designed to enhance and extend the capabilities of consumers’ favourite devices,” said Wendell P Weeks, Chairman, CEO, and President, Corning. “These new innovations build on the increasingly important and continually evolving role of highly engineered glass technologies in delivering improved product performance and functionality through touch capabilities, protective cover glass, and device connectivity.”

Companies all over are getting ready to show off new tech during CES. Samsung recently teased a new TV for the event. The most notable thing about the teaser is that Samsung seems to be advertising the TV's portrait mode capabilities. The portrait mode seems to be a strange aspect to tease, considering most of the things a TV is used for, such as watching shows, movies or playing games, are all displayed at a 16:9 widescreen resolution. The company could be hinting at a feature that lets you stream content from a Galaxy device to the TV, as most smartphones today run on portrait mode. The TV could also possibly incorporate the flexible displays the company will be showcasing at CES. It is also speculated that the TV may sport a translucent screen.

Samsung Display, a spin-off of Samsung Electronics, stated in December that it would be showing off bendable screens during the event; this could hint at radical design changes in future smartphones and TVs.

One of the displays to be showcased is a 5.5-inch flexible screen intended for use on smartphones. It will have a resolution of 1280x720 pixels, giving it a pixel density of 267 ppi. The other screen to be showcased will be a 55-inch TV-sized screen.

Samsung Display has said that the displays will offer more freedom when designing devices. The company also pointed out that though the screens can be bent, they aren't made for being rolled up.

Even LG is set to show off new screens at the event. The screens that will be showcased by the company range from 4.7-inch phone screens to 84-inch TVs, all of which sport high resolutions.

A 4.7-inch screen has a bezel that is just 1mm thick, making the phone more compact than other devices in the category. Another screen, measuring 5.5-inch, packs a pixel density of 403 ppi and will undoubtedly be the company's next attempt at a phablet. The company will also be showing off a 7-inch screen, which will presumably be used on a tablet. The screen has a resolution of 1920x1200 pixels, giving it a pixel density of 324 ppi.

Other screens that will be showcased by LG include a 12.9-inch display with a resolution of 2560x1700 pixels and a 13.3-inch laptop screen with a 2mm bezel.

The bigger screens to be showcased by the company include UHD TVs that have a resolution of 3840 x 2160, and will come in 55-inch, 65-inch, and 84-inch sizes. A 30-inch PC monitor, which packs a resolution of 4096 x 2160, will also be shown.
