CIDCO plans clutter-free, FTTH technology for Kharghar

One of the flipsides of having a technologically-equipped space is the ever tangled, clutter of wires that come with it. Now at one of their housing projects in Kharghar, Navi Mumbai, the City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra Ltd or CIDCO as they’re popularly known is planning something revolutionary and on something we ought to know about. In a nutshell, CIDCO aims to change the way wires are typically installed in homes, and to this end it plans to implement its infrastructural technology called FTTH, or fiber to the home, reports MiD Day. With the FTTH technology, which is in its final stages,electricity, Internet, CCTV, telephone and cable connections will be smoothly converged onto a single hub, and then moved to a terminal in the flat, thereby simplifying manageability and of course, reducing clutter.

Fiber, in itself is known to be a durable material and it offers ample resistance to water, heat and degradation and hence lasts long. In fact, some companies have obtained licenses to employ the FTTH infrastructure in the city, however, one factor that may go against CIDCO’s ambitions is the cost involved in installing an infrastructure, like FTTH. Hence, it is believed that despite such goodness, FTTH may face some resistance from some quarters, which also include some norms that may make it difficult to okay FTTH installation in homes. A typical FTTH connection will use only fiber optic cable for all the necessary connections, instead of multiple copper wires. 

Quoting an official the report states, "The FTTH system is worth its value and remains in good condition for years, as it is immune to all weather conditions. We think residents may voice their apprehensions towards the expenses, as it will cost them Rs 50,000 to avail of the facility. But we will try to educate citizens on the benefits of the system. Also, our prescribed rules may not allow an introduction of such systems in homes for Low Income Group (LIG) and Economically Weaker Sections (EWS). So we are working on these issues to make a safe passage for the introduction of the FTTH system as it is will be in demand in the next few years."

The technology is in its final stages, and according to the report, the proposal should be approved in a couple of months. Reportedly, CIDCO has started the construction of 1,200 of the proposed 10,000 homes in Sector 36 of Kharghar, wherein they may introduce their FTTH infrastructure.
