Epson Moverio BT-100 now available on Amazon for $699

| by Roydon Cerejo | General

Back in November 2011, Epson announced their plans about launching a pair of Android-powered, multimedia goggles that projects a 320-inch screen size on the lens, allowing you to watch your videos in complete privacy. They had merely announced it last year, with no details on the availability and pricing. If you were waiting anxiously for it, then you can now buy it from Amazon for $699. Well, maybe not immediately, since it’s launching on April 6, but at least you can pre-order it. The Moverio is the world’s first Android-powered wearable display that makes use of a special micro projection technology.

The glasses feature screens with a resolution of 960 x 650, which when viewed from a distance of an inch, from your eyes, looks gigantic due to the special projection technology. Epson claims that the Moverio BT-100 are a pair of see-through transparent, multimedia lenses, which allow users to not only watch their content with full privacy, but also be completely aware of their surroundings while doing so. Also bundled-in with the pair of multimedia glasses is an Android 2.2-enabled, pocket-size device, which allows for web browsing. Both used together will allow users to view various kinds of content like, MPEG 4 videos, files and other applications. The glasses will also let you watch 3D content, so if you have videos in the Stereoscopic 3D format, then you’ll be able to view them on-the-go. Other features of the unit, include Wi-Fi connectivity, control unit, detachable headphones, 4GB SD card, internal 1GB memory and a carry case.

This is quite an interesting concept and although it’s quite expensive, opens up a new portal for travel entertainment. Multimedia glasses have been around for a while, but have never really taken off primarily due to the cost factor and since they are were too bulky to carry around. Most of the devices never made it past the prototype stages and only saw the light of day at exhibitions, like CES.
