Google is the latest to join the patent infringer’s camp. The search giant, according to an Eastern District of Texas jury, will be expected to cough up $5 million for infringing the patents of a lesser known firm, Bedrock Computer Technologies LLC. The decision came out on the April 15, 2011, and on April 20, 2011, the verdict form became accessible via the court's electronic document system. Walking on a Bed(of)rocks..
The patent in question is that of a Linux-related in the kernel seen in the software behind Google’s servers. Theoretically, the patent reads as a - method and apparatus for information storage and retrieval using a hashing technique with external chaining and on-the-fly removal of expired data. However, if you think this is all the story has in store, we should add the proverbial – there’s more it than what meets the eye! Apparently, now, the tables have turned and Bedrock which was the one dictating terms is now under the axe. The axe-holder now is a certain Red Hat, the company supplying the OS behind Google's search engine services has taken Bedrock to court. The allegations now are that the patent right that Bedrock owns is invalid. |
