LG joins General Motors in electric car project

27 Aug, 2011, 2:51 pm IST | by Anuradha Shetty | General

After a successful stint with LG Electronics' LG Chem Ltd. - the deployment of Chevy Volt and Opel Ampara - General Motors is gearing up for the second innings of this association. An addition to the electric car market, General Motors (GM) and LG are cementing their plans of developing electric vehicles. Many are familiar with GM’s foray into this space, but the role of LG, which is one of the leading consumer electronics brand has not been spoken about as much. General Motors has been using LG-made lithium-ion battery cells hybrid in its Chevy Volt’s plug-in. However, this contribution, according to reports of the said agreement between General Motors Chief, Daniel Akerson and LG President Juno Cho is set to enhance to the point that LG would now oversee component, structural and architectural aspects of the project. Reports suggest that engineers of LG and GM have started work on the project already in the United States, and a team of engineers from GM would be soon be sent to help the LG team at their Korean plant.

With questions being raised on the carbon footprints of petrol and diesel run cars, electric cars seems to be an idea that many would not mind accepting. However, that is easier said than done. Electric cars come with a much steeper price tag than their gasoline-d counterparts. Hence, convincing people to go for electric cars hasn’t been very easy. One of the ways to reduce the development costs to the company, and subsequently to the consumers has been co-developing of this concept. Several popular car makers are announcing electric cars. Toyota is planning to tie-up with Tesla for an electric RAV4. To complete the same, Tesla landed itself a $100 million supply deal. Co-incidentally, this deal too came through just three days before the agreement between GM and LG.
