McAfee warns against online scammers ahead of iPhone 5 launch

| by Anuradha Shetty | General

Amidst curious onlookers and much anticipation, Apple Inc. took the covers off its latest iPhone - the iPhone 5, among its other offerings. The unveiling put an end to what seemed to be a never ending spate of rumours and leaks. While the actual launch is still away, enthusiasts are already preparing to lay their hands on the iPhone 5, as soon as it hits store shelves. McAfee cautions that many would rush to websites to reserve their unit of the newest iPhone. In an official statement, the company points out that Apple enthusiasts may not be the only ones looking out in anticipation for the newest iPhone to hit virtual stores. Fraudsters are on the lookout too, to cash in on the launch excitement.

Beware of online scammers

McAfee in its official statement warns users of online scammers using the frenzy surrounding the latest iPhone to send out phishing scams and emails with malicious links to prod unsuspecting consumers into giving out their credit card information and personal details. In his statement,  Gary Davis, VP, Global Consumer Marketing, said, “When there is a major event, like Black Friday, Cyber Money, or a much-anticipated Apple product going on sale, it queues up the bad guys to take advantage of all the excitement.”

McAfee in its official statement provides users with simple tips, using which they believe will keep users safe from falling prey to such scams, while they book their latest iPhone online.

McAfee advises users to go directly to the source of the product. It add that if users receive emails informing them of some good deal of the iPhone, they should not click on the link on the email, but should instead go to Apple’s URL and check for the same promotion there.

Importantly, McAfee asks users to update their security software with the latest patches and  upgrades. "That is your strongest protection and first line of defense against spyware and viruses,” adds the company statement.

Also, McAfee warns users against falling for offers such as "Buy 1 get 1 free" on the iPhone 5. Explaining this a little better, the official post adds that iPhones have been among the most sought after phones since their release, hence a genuine offer as the one mentioned above are unlikely.

As aforementioned, Apple yesterday unveiled its latest iPhone. Made entirely out of aluminium and glass, it weighs a mere 112g and is 20 percent lighter than the iPhone 4S, and is the thinnest iPhone yet at 7.6mm thick. Armed with a 4-inch, 326 ppi retina screen at a resolution of 1136 x 640 pixels, it’s the same width, but taller. Apple has chosen to debut iOS6 with the iPhone 5 and the new OS includes Apple's own Maps app, an updated version of Siri and lots more. Overall, the new iPhone has been upgraded in almost all respects.
