In a statement by Sony Pictures Chairman and CEO Michael Lynton and Co-chairman Amy Pascal said that a group of criminal hackers known as 'LulzSec' claimed to have breached some of their websites. They confirmed that a breach has occurred and have taken action to protect against further intrusion. They have also retained a respected team of experts to conduct the forensic analysis of the attack, which is ongoing. They ended by saying that they deeply regret and apologize for any inconvenience caused to consumers by this cybercrime.

On Thursday, hacker group Lulzsec posted statements online that they had broken into Sony Pictures and were easily able to download personal information of user’s which include passwords, email addresses and dates of births from Sony servers using a single SQL injection method. The group is willing to accept payments through Bitcoin virtual currency in order to aid them in doing more hacking. They are using Bitcoin as one can use this form of payments can be transferred without any evidence being traced back to them.

A person in the know how of the situation said that the site that was hacked had been offline for years but the information was left on the server of Sony Pictures. The person went on to say that the data which had been accessed by Lulzsec had been collected by a website created by a third party contractor for Sony Pictures International.
