The Internet Society has, in its latest announcement, shared that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), in a bid to cooperate on a host of Internet-focused projects, reflecting the shared interests of the two organisations.
The first collaborative project of the Internet Society and FICCI will be an event, called the India Internet Governance Conference (IIGC) on 4-5 October 2012 in Delhi, India. The agenda of the event will cover a wide range of Internet issues, including the multi-stakeholder model for Internet governance, International Telecommunication Regulations and Internet governance, national priorities for broadband access, cyber security and privacy, Internet Protocol v6 (IPv6), and the Internet’s role in social and economic development.
Rajnesh Singh, Internet Society Regional Bureau Director for Asia-Pacific, commented, “The Internet Society is a strong advocate of a free and open Internet. We look forward to collaborating with FICCI to develop and offer programs that reflect our mutual interests, especially in the critical areas of Internet policy and standards. The Asia-Pacific regional bureau works closely with our Chapters, members, partners and stakeholders, and a wide range of regional organisations to drive initiatives focused on the continuation of an open Internet that promotes innovation, business opportunity, and development in the region.”
The first to come out of this collaboration is an event
A global, mission-based organisation, the Internet Society promotes the open development, evolution, and use of the Internet for the benefit of all people throughout the world. The Asia-Pacific Regional Bureau of the Internet Society is focused on enhancing Internet access, development and capacity building across the region, driving IPv6 adoption, encouraging participation in the Internet standards development process, and working with regional forums and stakeholders on Internet-related policy matters.
The FICCI is a non-government, not-for-profit organisation that works closely with Indian businesses and the Government of India on policy issues, enhancing competitiveness, thereby making contribution in the domain of intellectual discourses of political economy, and expanding business opportunity for industry through a range of specialised services and global linkages.
Rajiv Kumar, Secretary General, FICCI, commented, “As the apex chamber of commerce in India, FICCI appreciates the importance of a healthy Internet ecosystem and its growing role in world prosperity. FICCI jointly with the Internet Society looks forward to taking a leading role in making the Internet a better place for all. With this landmark collaboration, we hope to work towards finding answers to a wide range of policy issues relating to Internet governance. We expect that the outcomes from the governance conference will help inform policy dialogue within India as well as shape the global agenda on Internet governance discourse."
