Steve Jobs at the Apple Special Event, right after calling his 'partner in crime' Steve Wozniak on stage, talked about the new Apple store in China. He mentioned it's a breakthrough in glassworks and features a 40 foot high glass cylinder. He also mentioned that the Paris Apple store has been restored and is open and flourishing. The London Apple Store in Convent Garden is coming soon. So the stats are that there are Apple stores in 10 countries in the world which include the US, UK, China, France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Japan, Australia and Canada. They get over a million customers everyday and about 50% of those customers everyday are buying their first Macs. Jobs then goes on to talk about iOS4.1. The update includes taking HD photos, tv show rentals uploading HD videos over wifi, Game Center and bug fixes. HD photos, he mentioned are HD because the device takes 3 separate photos, one for brights, one for mids and one for darks and puts them together into one shot. Game Center is like a social networking center for gaming. You can create a community to play multiplayer games and compare scores on single player games as well. Jobs then gave a sneak peak of iOS 4.2. This OS is specially designed for the iPad. It has shared printer capabilities and AirTunes which they're changing to AirPlay which will allow users to play videos over Wi-Fi on their devices. There's really not much done to the shuffle. They do keep reducing it's size though. This new version will also supports Genius Playlist and the voice over feature. It will be priced at approximately Rs. 2,350. The iPod Nano took a serious hit in terms of size. Its been scaled down to the size of a Shuffle and instead of a click wheel you have multi-touch display. It's also encased in an aluminium shell making it look real classy. It'll also be available in some funky colors and the OS allows you to move icons around like you would on a Touch or iPhone. The 8GB version will be about Rs. 7000 and the 16GB version would be approximately Rs. 8,400. Jobs says that the iPod Touch has outsold Nintendo and Sony portable devices... put together. Seems about right. The next gen iPod Touch is thinner and will also come equipped with Apple's new 24 bit color, LED backlit Retina Display, following in the footsteps of the iPhone 4. The latest iPod Touch is of course everything we thought it would be. The iPhone 4 without the phone. The A4 Chip and 3 Axis gyro will take portable gaming to a whole new level on the Apple front. Of course the addition of a front and rear camera will also make it a hard device to pass up. iMovies is also on board for editing your videos right on the device. 40 hour battery life is still a bit hard to believe from Apple, but we'd love to put it to the test. Approx. Indian Pricing for the new iPod Touch 8GB - Rs.10,350 32GB - Rs. 14 000 64GB - Rs. 18,700 Naturally these are just conversions of dollar prices and with taxes etc. we can expect the new touch with all it's funky new features to be much more expensive when it hits the Indian shelf. Moving on to iTunes, being updated to iTunes 10, the logo is new. There is also a new and improved interface. To aid discovery of music, Apple's creating social networking for music, called Ping. Users can get customized top ten charts of just what people are downloading that they follow. It looks a lot like Facebook and functions a lot like Twitter. You can make a circle of followers, provide your opinions on music and have custom song and album charts. Ping also includes concert information. Users can see what's upcoming, what their friends are going to, who's playing in their vicinity etc. Ping will be accessible on the desktop version of iTunes and on mobile devices. Jobs then moved on to Apple TV. Apple TV's changed sizes, it can fit in your palm and it is now black in colour. It's got HDMI, USB, optical audio and Ethernet. You can connect to your computer with no syncing involved. You can rent movies for $4.99 in HD and tv episodes commercial free for $0.99. You can also access Netflix, Youtube, Mobile Me and Flickr as well as other social media sharing spaces. The movie rentals space has a rotten tomatoes meter rating built in. The movie function skips chapters and fast forwards/rewinds without any lag. When you rent a tv show, you have 30 days to start watching it and 48 hours to finish it when you start watching. He then talks about AirPlay which allows you to stream video content from your iPad to Apple TV. The new Apple TV will be available for $99 and will come out in November. ....Aaaaaand then Chris Martin from Coldplay comes out to perform a song. He's playing 'Yellow'. And then Viva La Vida. We've seen some really superb innovations this time around as well from Apple. The new Nano and iPod Touch are going to be hard to ignore in the next few weeks. We suggest you start saving up from today. Irrespective of what Steve Jobs says, we don't see these prices for India at all. But we're still hoping. |
