AMD 28nm GPUs rumoured to surface in December

| by Roydon Cerejo | Graphics Cards

With Nvidia’s Kepler GPU being pushed back to 2012, the road is wide open for AMD to swoop in and take the lead, again. Heise.de has got an inside tip that AMD might announce their next generation graphics cards sometime in the second week of December. An anonymous source also mentioned that it would be somewhere between the sixth to ninth of December. It’s still not clear whether these will be the mobile or desktop chips.

AMD has chosen TSMC for their 28nm fabrication process and it seems like the silicon manufacturing plant is running into some problems with this new process, which is what’s causing the delay. The red team usually launches their new line of GPUs in November but now, even if they do launch it in December, it will probably be in limited quantities. At the recent Fusion 11 Conference held in Taipei, in early October, AMD demonstrated their 28nm GPU running in notebooks, so we know some of the chips are ready. It seems like all fabrication houses are having trouble manufacturing 28nm chips right now so high volume production would only start sometime next year.
