AMD almost ready with 28nm mobile GPUs

16 Sep, 2011, 11:16 am IST | by Roydon Cerejo | Graphics Cards

The next round of GPU wars are right around the corner and it seems AMD has got a headstart (as always) in the race. With Nvidia clearly stating that ‘Kepler’, their next generation graphics cards, will not see the light of day in 2011, AMD seems almost ready with their offering. The company showed off a mobile version of their next-gen GPU running Dirt 3 with DX11. Unfortunately, we don’t have any performance numbers, yet, but from the picture we can see that it was connected to a 22-inch monitor, so on can assume that it handles Full HD gaming pretty well.

Hope it doesn't run as hot as their current line-up

The graphics card was placed on a test board, which resembles a PCB of a notebook. A copper heatsink was used to cool the card and judging by the size of it, it could be a mid-range card, which would eventually make it to multimedia notebooks. If AMD launches their next-gen cards by November, they will be the first to have discrete graphics cards based on 28nm fabrication process. The previous line-up from both AMD and Nvidia were based on the 45nm fabrication process. TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation) will be supplying this new cutting edge silicon to AMD.

The red team haven’t revealed any other details, not even a codename. At least, we know they are making steady progress and that’s good enough for now.
