AMD Gives Catalyst Control Center a Makeover

Ever torn your hair out in frustration trying to work all those drop-down boxes in ATI’s display control panel – the Catalyst Control Center (CCC)? If you have, then you were just one of millions clamoring for the massively outdated User Interface to get a makeover. AMD has finally answered all those demands (prayers?) by announcing that the December version of the Radeon display drivers will contain a preview of the CCC’s new interface. Out with the red, in with the green The UI refresh makes sense for a few reasons. Firstly, with AMD retiring the ATI brand, the interface needed to rebranded and updated. Secondly, user complaints about the six-year old (it’s been touched up a few times, but it’s still the same thing at its core) interface had grown to unimaginable levels – so much so that last year, people who’d previously had bad experiences with the CCC were refraining from buying the Radeon 5xxx series of cards. The new interface has already been in the hands of users via the 8.80 version drivers for motherboards with on-board Radeon graphic chipsets. While the changes are nearly all cosmetic, there are a few changes rumored that might make ATI fans happy. The default setting for the 68xx series cards (which weren’t supported by the 10.11 version of the drivers, by the way) has been changed to ‘high-quality’ which should appease the Cayman cards’ customers. According to AnandTech, the 10.12 version of the Catalyst display drivers will come in two flavors – one with the original CCC bundled and one with the preview for the new UI. However, the preview is only compatible with Windows Vista and 7, because it makes use of a few features that are not available on Windows XP. Sorry XP users, looks like you’ll never be rid of those drop-down boxes. |
