The R600 will have 700 million transistors as compared to 384 million for its previous generation R580 GPU. The GPU features a 512bit memory interface with support for GDDR3 and GDDR4. R580 also supported GDDR3 and GDDR4. On the 30th of March, AMD will debut the R600 as the X2900XTX, in two different versions — one for the OEM and the other for retail. AMD's guideline states that the OEM version will be 12 inches long and will have a quiet fan cooler. On the other hand the retail version will be 9.5 inches long and will come with vapor chamber cooling. Vapor chambers are already in use on high-end CPU coolers, so it wouldn't be a surprise to see them cooling GPUs also. 1GB of GDDR4 memory is the reference configuration for Radeon X2900 XTX. Approximately a month later, AMD will launch the GDDR3 version of the card. This card, dubbed as the X2900XT will feature 512MB of GDDR3 memory and lower clock frequencies that the X2900XT. AMD claims that the R600 launch will be a hard launch i.e. the product availability should be immediate. For more read here. |
