| 32 teams, 64 matches, jam packed stadiums with millions of screaming fans and over 29 billion TV viewers worldwide. One of the biggest sporting events in the world, FIFA World Cup 2006 is bigger, better and mobile! Now mobile TV companies are cashing in on football mania as industry watchers predict up to $300m coming in as revenue from football fans downloading and watching clips on mobile phones this year. There are a plethora of options for football fans on the move (mainly in Europe) with operators such as 3Italia and Debitel catering to live telecasts on mobile phones. Until now, content on TV phones were streamed through networks, which had several constraints with respect to capacity and quality. However, this year, mobile TV companies as well as mobile service providers, the world over, have updated their technology to grab a bite of the world cup pie. Now subscribers can watch television on mobile-phone models capable of receiving television signals without compromising on quality. The Seoul Metropolitan Government has gone a step further by installing broadcasting relay equipment for mobile television in the city's subway stations to allow commuters to watch television programs on their wireless handsets on the move. Informa Telecoms & Media has predicted some 210 million mobile TV subscribers worldwide by 2011, with the Asia-Pacific region leading the way with 95.1 million subscribers followed by Europe at 68.7 million. David McQueen, senior analyst at Informa Telecoms & Media said, “(By) the 2008 Olympics, we'll all be much more prepared to watch TV on our phones and by the 2010 World Cup the infrastructure will be mature and one in 13 mobile phone users worldwide will own a mobile TV handset." |
